Here you can gain insight into a world of images, music and stories created by Lennart Larsen based on the images that can be seen at Café Satchmo in Roskilde.

You can see a number of my books, and listen to some of the music, that I have recorded, and you can take a shortcut by using the buttons below.

In 1974, I stood with my wife and a couple of friends outside what is now Café Satchmo in Roskilde. The premises were for rent, and we had plans to open a gallery, but the rent was too high, 2000 kr per month. At the same time, two older women were also standing outside the building and they had the same idea. We held a meeting, but did not agree on a collaboration. Valborg Nørby and Åse Bährenholdt, as the two ladies were called, soon found another premises and opened Galleri Sct. Agnes, where I exhibited in the period 1981 – 89

In October 1998, LONG DOG held a record reception at Café Satchmo with our first release “Loose Ends” In 2007, I began working with Natasha Christiane Dagmar Fleming-Seipelt on hanging pictures. Rosenhavestræde 2, 4000 Roskilde has now played a role in my life for 50 years

Kombinationen tekst & billede

Fotoprint Day Or Night 329 X 483MM

I love the combination of text/image, and especially when the two create more questions than answers
The image is one of the first to be put up at the café almost 17 years ago.
The idea from the start was that the images would be slowly replaced, so that guests would not immediately notice the changes.
A bit like when we look at ourselves in the mirror every day.

This image, however, should remain in its place, says Natasha.

CHANEL Barcelona Fotoprint 483 x 329 mm

Grafitti N.Y. Fotoprint 483 X 329 mm
Grafittiposter 350 x 520 mm Fotocollage 700 x 500 mm

The three images above are each unique examples of the combination of text and image.

The first CHANEL was one of those images that suddenly appears. I don’t know if it was a renovation or a completely new store under construction, but the logo, which stands on the white background and signals luxury and elegance, compared to the building materials, creates a nice contrast.

The graffiti wall from New York, sloppy tags, actually, carried by the strong shadow from the fire escape, not visible, and forms an almost abstract image.

The graffiti poster comes from Copenhagen, where the pillars by Holmens Kanal had been tagged one day. I photographed them all, knowing, that it would be removed quickly. Then I put them together to make the posters above

The image is composed of a snapshot from a street in Boston, where the two people were standing in front of a shop window with a poster of one of them in the window. I don’t know what the occasion was, but the balloons, the poster in the window and the two people standing casually chatting doesn’t seem luxurious, but the colors were fascinating.

EDGE is a luxury eyewear brand. I framed them in the dark red frame The left side of the image consists of the EDGE logo in pink with inlaid mirabelle flowers here on a light gray background, and with the balloons quietly pinking past. The image was included as a spread in the book nuancer from 2012

WIRED Fotocollage 90 x 33 cm

LAB 46 Fotoprint 450 x 450 mm
No. 9 210 x 594 mm Opslag fra Nuancer

Originally this image is a double spread from the book Nuancer, and measures 21 cm in height and 60 cm in width, but has since been enlarged and foam board has been attached.

The two circles are Petri dishes with colored agar and objects.

This picture is from a series of pictures from the harbor in Thyborøn.

Since my wife was born and raised in Thyborøn, we have had our time in this area,

which offers fantastic opportunities for photography.

There is a blacksmith and shipyard at the harbor, which means, a lot of materials are deposited and I can walk around and take pictures.

This picture is a close-up – a plastic can with a blue piece of fabric stuffed in the opening.

To the left of the blue fabric it looks like it says 80 .

I supported this by writing 14 at the bottom right.

This is the only addition to the original picture.

Vejarbejde Paris 1982. Fotoprint 329 X 483 mm

This picture is one of my absolute favorites – the picture contains many of the elements that are important to me.

The composition and colors are classic.

I really like roadworks because they create a temporary sculpture in the landscape.

It is established for a reason that is not necessarily apparent, but through the barrier and tools a still life is created.

In this case, the arrangement also contains a wonderful foreign element – the jacket hanging on the tripod.

It is not a work jacket, but rather a men’s jacket for neat use, even with a small handkerchief in the top pocket

On a visit to a summer house in Lumsås, I came across a vase made of test tubes.

The weather was good, so I placed the vase in the sand with a view of the sea and filled the test tubes with blue-colored water.

The text came later, introducing one of the many tests, not generally known to the public.

Many peoples have over time been displaced, persecuted or even exterminated .

This applies, to the Hopes back in the Middle Ages, and most recently to the Considerations, which have been squeezed out of the Postulates.

Here is a small example of the work process, from original photo to finished image

The image on the far left is a photo taken at a scrapyard in Thyborøn. Some mechanical part, that has lost its original function.

At the center image, I have chosen an oval shape for the final image. I have also added the color red in selected parts.

The image on the right shows the finished result.. I have added 3 more colors, but respect the original construction of the object.

The image was finally glued onto foam board, cut in shape, and hung in the café.

Den første hed cover ups, sketches for an unfinished project 2012 40 sider i a4 Højformat.

I have made several books in the last 15 years. Almost all of the books are picture books, and the vast majority are only printed in a single copy.

The first ones were printed by Lasertryk, which offered online design of photo books.

I quickly figured out how to design the pages in Photoshop, and then transfer the individual pages as full-page photos into the layout program that the company offered.

The first one was called “cover ups, sketches for an unfinished project” 2012 40 pages in A4 High format.

It was followed by the book “Perfect Imperfections” the following year.

This book was the same format, but this time on 100 pages.

Cover ups
sketches for an unfinished project

Perfect Imperfections

Ethvert medie indeholder nye muligheder.

Gratis vel at mærke.

The books function at the same time as a catalogue and an exhibition – you don’t know what awaits you on the next page – there is no overview or continuous progression like in a novel.

The individual page is the wall on which the pictures are put up. I started putting a single picture over two pages, so that the picture was broken up by the spread. Every medium contains new possibilities.

In those years, the company Lasertryk had an extremely user-friendly policy towards complaints. It happened that the book they delivered did not meet expectations, and when I complained, they gave me a new book as compensation. Free of charge, of course. I was given a 100-page book as a gift, and suddenly had a positive problem – What should I fill the book with. That became the book intro X lemon ODDSANDENDSBITSANDPIECE and a few extras.

The book contains a number of my song lyrics in addition to pictures and thus became the first book where I combined text and pictures. The members of LONG DOG Orchestra wanted a copy and it turned out that by ordering 10 copies of the book we got the price down to 200 kr.

So this book was actually printed in 11 copies.

14 opslag i alt.

Maj 2020

The book “F R A G I L I T Y” was created during the pandemic.

I had previously made a series of prints in the size 16 X 12 cm, each print contains a letter from the alphabet and is done in soft colors that can be reminiscent of watercolor.

14 of these prints are placed on the odd pages of the book.

The facing pages were created exclusively for the book, and consist of a statement and an illustration.

Each spread constitutes a unit. 14 spreads in total.

May 2020

The Biodiversity heritage drawings Selection

1. April 2020 Til Louis & Anna Klara

The Biodiversity Heritage Drawings Selection is a small book that celebrates the countless forms of color of different plants and other living beings on planet Earth.

More than 150,000 drawings of plants, fish, mammals, insects and birds have been posted on flickr, in what is called The Biodiversity Library, and all of these old drawings are in the public domain.

My selection is made out of pure interest and fascination. I am not sure that all of the selected species still exist on Earth, but once upon a time there were people who took the time to draw and/or paint the picture, which was thereby preserved for future generations and at the same time shows how amazing this planet is and how important it is to explore and preserve everything.

The book MAPS came about after I bought a volume of Johannes Mejer’s Map of the Danish Kingdom, printed in 3 volumes in 1943.

It was on sale in the for 40 DKK, and I brought it home. The book contained a series of drawn maps of parts of Denmark, which at that time also included Skåne, Halland and Blekinge. The maps were very inspiring and I photographed some of the pages and started to fantasize about them.

It later turned out that my good friend Karina Adel Jarlstrup had also found a copy of the same publication. Another volume, which she created a series of pictures from:

She showed these pictures in Galleri Wärme in February 2022 at the exhibition “Omvej til Smutveje”

This is not The Northpole book contains documentation and the story of a project that I created back in 1994.

This is not The Northpole is at the same time a site-specific sculpture and a composition.

The sculpture consists of 12 cans and a ski pole.

In a sunny spot, place the ski pole and place the cans in a circle around the pole.

The length of the pole’s shadow is used as the radius of the circle. The sculpture is now established.

The composition consists of the sounds that the viewer experiences during the time the shadow of the stick moves – until it is clear to the viewer that the length of the shadow has changed.

The Sheboygan Files

The Sheboygan Files 15X15 cm 20 sider Klik på omslag og se bogen. Click on Cover and view The Book

The book The Sheboygan Files was based on a picture I found on the Sheboygan city website.

Sheboygan is a city about the size of Roskilde in the state of Michigan, U.S.A.

My friend Tom Uebelherr has moved there with his family, and I was curious about the city, so I went to the city website.

Here I found an old picture of a well-dressed gentleman sitting on top of a dead horse in the middle of the street in the late 1800s in the city of Sheboygan.

The picture is well-known in the city, and over time there has been much speculation about the reason for this scene.

Bogen kaldte jeg The Sheboygan Files.

The SHEBOYGAN FILES & ASSORTED MYSTERIES

At that time, the publisher Pixum offered a format:

20 pages in the size 15 X 15 cm, hardcover with a cardboard slipcase. A small pixie book.

I really liked this format and started to fantasize about “The Man on the Dead Horse”.

I even got Tom to take some pictures of the street where the scene had taken place more than a hundred years ago.

I called the book The Sheboygan Files.

In parallel with this project, Tom Uebelherr offered me an exhibition at the Green Bay University Gallery.

The exhibition became:

LONG DOG Orchestra all them bones

“After 10 years of live performances, the Danish band Long Dog Orchestra is finally releasing a well-deserved album on CD. The album’s real title is actually ‘The Magic Return of Big Foot Barolo’.

The debut album All Them Bones first pushes you into a pleasant bluesy/Americana atmosphere with the drunken café song ‘And The Walls Came Down’. Then it gets even more crazy and down to earth with the tight rhythm of ‘Who Let The Chickens Out’; now try to catch them again. Recognizable thin tones on the Fender and a singing sound à la Johnny Cash make ‘Cold, Cold, Wind’ warmer than it seems. Lennart Larsen sings like the late Ray Manzarek on his solo albums: half singing, half talking.

The first bars of ‘Dog Bark’ sound a lot like David Bowie’s ‘Fame’. Or ‘The Wren’ reminds me of the Kinks’ ‘Muswell Hill Billies’. And so you can detect strong influences from other bands in every song and on every instrument.

The Long Dog Orchestra consists of skilled old guys who play convincing blues/Americana songs with experience.

An eighteen years journey from the studio project LONG DOG
to the live band LONG DOG Orchestra.
Since I started playing the harmonica and singing in various blues bands in the late sixties, music has been a big part of my life. In the late eighties, I was introduced to sampling, and we started collecting sounds and using them in music. Through this, the idea arose, that we could use samples to renew the expression of blues music. Back in 1995, I started a project with Anders Poulsen, Lars Bo Jensen, which led to the first Long Dog release "Loose Ends" from 1998.

We created our own samples and combined them with our instruments.

“Loose Ends” contains mainly interpretations of classic blues songs and only a few of our own compositions, but the process, and the possibilities that sampling created, meant that I together with Lars Bo Jensen, started writing new songs, and the next release “Heads’n Tails” 2001, consisted entirely of our own songs.
Anders Poulsen had left the project, and Jan Andersen had stepped in as guitarist.
Both albums were well received

“Hound Dog Taylor meets Dylan (“Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat”). Strange as that may sound, it doesn’t come lose to capturing this superb 1998 recording (………..).

This is definitely not your father’s blues disc. Call it what you will (a difficult task), this wholly unique effort is superb”.

Mark E Gallo mnblues.com on Loose Ends https://www.mnblues.com/cdreview/2002/longdog-looseends-mg.html

“What to make of this one? I have to admit I simply don’t know. Not much of a review, true, but rarely have I encountered anything quite as . . . umm . . . unique (yeah, unique – that’s it!) as Long Dog’s “Heads ‘n Tails.” It’s definitely not a blues album, of that much I’m sure”. If you’re feeling adventurous, Long Dog is definitely worth checking out. If you prefer the tried and true and familiar, stay clear of this one”.

John Taylor mnblues.com on Heads´n Tails https://www.mnblues.com/cdreview/2002/longdog-heads-jt.html

In 2005 we released “Old Stories New Tracks” again with our own songs.

Guitarist Simon Andersen participated,

and we invited two drummers to play

on the pre-recorded tracks.

Simon Andersen took the initiative in 2012 for a compilation release and invited LONG DOG, who contributed 4 songs to the release.

It was in continuation of these recordings, that the LONG DOG Orchestra was formed.

Until then LONG DOG had been a studio project and never performed.

The band performed for the first time at the presentation of Routes.

In 2016, the second compilation album A BRAND NEW SOUND was released, where Long Dog also participated with 4 songs.
